Sister Teresa McShane, DMJ

Sister Teresa McShane is a Daughter of Mary and Joseph in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. After completing her novitiate in Ireland and Belgium, she made her vows in 1956 and began her ministry in California, where she enjoyed many years as a teacher.
A lover of mathematics, Sister Teresa taught at St. Bernard High School for 14 years. During that time, she had the unique privilege of teaching Kevin Chilton, who later became an astronaut. She still remembers the remarkable moment when she witnessed him bring in the Endeavor as it landed in the desert!
Her journey took her to Rome for a year-long renewal program, which included a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This experience prepared her for a new role as Pastoral Associate in the Diocese of Monterey, where she faithfully served until her retirement.
Over the years, Sister Teresa served her community in many ways. She held leadership roles as Provincial, and member of the General Team gave her the opportunity to travel to Africa, Brazil, and Europe. As the Executive Director of the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center, and later as a member of the Board of Directors, this ministry has brought her many blessings.
One of her most memorable adventures was a pilgrimage along the 500-mile route to Santiago de Compostela, a journey she completed by alternating between walking and riding a bus.
Now enjoying her retirement in Rancho Palos Verdes, Sister Teresa embraces a quieter rhythm of life filled with prayer, reading, exercise, volunteering, and rest.
