Sister June Schlereth, SA, age 86, was born on June 5, 1931 in Gunn, Alberta, Canada to Peter and Agnes Schlereth in a large farming family with nine siblings. June and her sister Teresa traveled to Graymoor and entered the congregation together on November 19, 1949. Their first vows were professed on May 10, 1951.

Sister June’s Atonement missionary journey brought her to many different countries and ministries. Her early years were spent on the East and West coasts of the USA as well as in Michigan giving faith formation for all ages, leading prayer groups and scripture studies, visiting the sick and elderly in homes and hospitals and providing for the poor and needy in the parishes. June also served God’s people in Jatai, Brazil for three years; Assisi, Italy in 1997, then after the earthquake of September 26, 1997 she was transferred to Rome, Italy. She also served the poor and needy in Vancouver, BC, and when that mission closed she was assigned to Edmonton, AB, Canada as part of the Franciscan Centre; then was part of the local SA community in San Juan Bautista, CA. Sisters June and Teresa returned to Graymoor on March 31, 2016.

Sister June remains in touch with family, friends and former parishioners through use of her laptop computer. The availability of WiFi within her own bedroom at Lurana Health Care Residence certainly is a convenience that we are so grateful for!

Sister is a woman of deep prayer and contemplation. Sister June’s open heart, bright smile and twinkling eyes draw others into her presence for a chat and positive experience that lifts one’s burden in the moments shared together.

In 2017, the Franciscan Sisters of Atonement received a grant from SOAR! to install technology upgrades, including WiFi, for their senior Sisters.
