2012 DC Award Dinner

SOAR!’s 2012 Award Dinner in Washington, DC, was held at the Mellon Auditorium on Friday, November 2, 2012. A cocktail reception as well as a live and silent auction began the evening, followed by our dinner and annual award presentation from 7:30-10 pm.

Our 2012 Washington, DC Elizabeth Ann Seton Award Honorees: Reverend William Byrne and Sister Deirdre Byrne

A native of Washington, DC, Reverend William Byrne is the youngest of eight children of Dr. and Mrs. William D. Byrne. Prior to his ordination in 1994, Fr. Byrne attended Georgetown Prep, College of the Holy Cross, the Pontifical University as well as the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas both in Rome. In the spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Fr. Byrne is known for his commitment to community as teacher, preacher and pastoral guide for the young.  He currently serves as Pastor of St. Peter’s Church on Capitol Hill and as Secretary for Pastoral Ministry and Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Washington.

Sister Deirdre Byrne is someone whose life exemplifies the words that to serve Christ is to serve the poor. Sister Dierdre holds the rank of colonel in the US Army Medical Corps, is a general surgeon at the Spanish Catholic Center in Washington, DC and is a professed member of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts. Akin to the life experience of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Sister Deirdre has looked to the events of the world surrounding her through a religious lens to find their deeper meaning. Her response has been a life committed to serving the sick, the poor and the wounded.
