2021 SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON AWARD
Bishop John J. O’Hara
Archdiocese of New York
Bishop John Joseph O’Hara was ordained to the episcopacy in 2014. Appointed by Cardinal Dolan as Episcopal Vicar of both southern Manhattan and Staten Island, Bishop O’Hara also served the archdiocese as Vicar for Planning. Pope Francis accepted his resignation in April after reaching the retirement age of 75, but he plans to continue to remain in ministry serving the Archdiocese of New York.
Bishop O’Hara was ordained to the priesthood in 1984 in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. He served as parochial vicar at Saint Charles Parish in Oakwood Heights, Staten Island, and as parochial vicar and then pastor at the Parish of Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus in Castleton Corners, Staten Island.
During his years on Staten Island, Bishop O’Hara was very involved in interreligious dialogue, seeking to build bridges of communication and understanding among the Island’s very diverse faith communities.
In 2012, Cardinal Dolan appointed Bishop O’Hara to be the first Director of the Office of Strategic Pastoral Planning. In this capacity, Bishop O’Hara supervised the ongoing reorganization of parishes throughout the archdiocese.
Bishop O’Hara was appointed by Cardinal Dolan as a member of the ecumenical/interfaith Committee of Religious Leaders, which meets to address issues of community concern and to provide leadership in promoting understanding and dialogue among all peoples living with the five boroughs of New York City.
A chaplain to and member of both the Knights of Malta and the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, Bishop O’Hara also serves as a board member of the Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America.

SOAR! is presenting the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award to the Mara Family, represented by John and Denise Mara. John Mara served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, the School of the Holy Child, and Iona Prep, his alma mater. He is also on the boards of Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, NY, and Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York, and he recently joined CHART, Covenant House Action and Reaction Tank, as a founding member, which focuses on combatting human trafficking.
