Known for her curious mind, playful spirit and sense of humor, Sister Theodosia Lukiw, joined the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great in Fox Chase, PA in 1949 when she was just 18 years old.

Since then, 70 years have passed and Sister “Theo,” as the Sisters affectionately call her, has touched countless lives.

Sister Theodosia taught in numerous parishes: Watervliet, NY; New York City, NY; Hamtramck, MI; Philadelphia, PA; and at Saint Basil Academy in Fox Chase Manor, PA. She has also traveled the world to teach. As the Academic Dean at the Pedagogical-Catechetical School in IvanoFrankivsk in Ukraine she worked with the training of catechists from 1995 to 1997.

In addition to her role as an educator, Sister Theodosia served as Provincial Superior for the Order based in Fox Chase Province from 1975-1985.

Sister Theodosia took a very straightforward approach to challenges.  When she was principal at St. George Academy in New York City, she helped move more than a thousand students to a new school building, eight blocks away.

On the day of the move, the teachers gathered the students, schoolbooks in hand, and made their way to the new school.

Along the way a police officer saw the vast number of children walking, and asked Sister Theodosia if she had a parade permit. “No,” she said. “Do you have a permit for me?” The officer was not amused, but helped make sure the children got to their new school safely.

Today, Sister continues to be a visible sign of God’s love.  Her ready sense of humor means she is often sought out for company and an anecdote.  When you see the twinkle in Sister’s eye, you know that she is ready to welcome you in her embrace and share a humorous story.

Sister Theodosia and the Sisters are grateful to SOAR! donors, and for the grant to upgrade their heating and air conditioning system.
